Industries of the Future

EIO was notified through the Ohio Office of Energy Efficiency that EIO has prevailed in a competition for a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to implement the State Industries of the Future program for Ohio.

EIO has chosen to work initially with Kent State University, University of Akron and Cleveland State’s Advanced Manufacturing Center targeting the steel, metalcasting, chemical/polymer, and glass industries. We have already met one of the major goals of the program by forming teams of Ohio firms and universities to compete for IoF grant opportunities. Currently we have proposals being submitted which include Ohio’s steel companies, metalcasting firms, and glass producers.

EIO’s efforts on behalf of Ohio’s Energy Intensive industries have been noted by the DOE program office and led to a formal Memorandum of Understanding with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This MOU has resulted in a number of projects where Ohio teams have had access to the resources of ORNL. Similarly, EIO has nucleated a number of other projects utilizing the resources of Wright Patt AFB through Ohio’s Technology Action Fund Collaborative Technology programs.

EIO is also participating on a number of other efforts which include a joint Ohio-Poland project with Krakow’s Foundry Research Institute to develop a new, light weight aluminum alloy that contains waste fly-ash from coal powered electric generation plants.
